Small Batch Slow Cooker Applesauce – Flour Sack Sweets

Applesauce has become a staple in my sons diet. He loves it! He also doesn’t know Mama fools him into eating other food items, such as broccoli, by mixing some of his beloved applesauce in with it. Works like a charm! Personally, I like a chunkier applesauce. I love the little bits of soft apple along with the sauce aspect of applesauce. I also like a hint of cinnamon in my applesauce as well as the sweetness that comes from just the apples.

I make this in small batches, usually 4 apples at a time. I find that I’ll buy apples, and as we are getting down to the last of them everyone is tired of eating apples, or they are starting to get a bit mealy. Making applesauce is the perfect solution.

Ingredients
  • 4 apples, pealed, cored and sliced I like to use my apple peeler, corer. It slices the apples in long spirals, which I leave whole and just place the whole spiraled apple in the slow cooker.
  • 1/2 cinnamon stick I use 1/2 a stick of cinnamon because I like a very light, subtle cinnamon flavor. You can leave this out if you don't want any cinnamon flavor or use a whole stick if you'd like a stronger cinnamon flavor.

Instructions
  1. Place apples in slow cooker and turn slow cooker to low. I place the cinnamon stick on top of the apples, and let this cook for about 2 hours. At the 2 hour mark I check to see if I need to add any water. Depending on the apples you use, you may have to add a little water to keep the apples from burning to the sides of your slow cooker. I've had really good luck with Fuji and Braeburn apples. I let this cook for another 2 hours. At the 4 hour mark this is usually ready to mash. I like to use my potato masher for a chunkier texture, but if you want a smooth texture, use your food processor or blender. I put this in a container in the fridge and we eat on it for about a week.
