Basic White Bread Recipe

I love carbs. Carbs might be the enemy, but I love the enemy! This recipe for a basic white bread is so versatile and very easy as it can be made in your stand mixer. I enjoy kneading bread dough, but sometimes I just don’t have the time. This recipe produces a slightly sweet loaf and is perfect for sandwiches and toast. I love it with butter and a drizzle of honey. It also makes a really yummy grilled cheese and tomato sandwich! So good!

Instructions
  1. In a small saucepan, warm milk, 3 tbs sugar, salt, butter, and optional honey until dissolved. This should be allowed to cools one so it doesn't kill your yeast. While this is warming, add warm water, yeast, and 1 tsp sugar to bowl of your stand mixer. Let foam, usually about 5 minutes. It helps if you warm the bowl up first. I usually do this by adding hot water to the bowl and letting it stand prior to starting, and then dump it out when I go to add my warm water.
  2. One yeast has foamed up, add your milk mixture and 4 cups of flour. Mix on speed 2 for a couple of minutes. Continue adding flour a 1/2 cup at a time. The dough shouldn't stick to the bowl, but it should be a bit tacky and elastic.
  3. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover and let rise until doubled. Usually about an hour.
  4. When doubled, split into two balls. I like to shape into a rectangle, and then lightly press into my greased loaf pan. Repeat with second ball. Cover and allow to rise until doubled, about another hour.
  5. When dough is ready to bake, bake at 400 degrees F for about 30 minutes or until golden brown and hollow sounding. Remove from pans and brush tops with a little butter. Cool loaves laying on their sides.
